May 8-14: Women’s health, nutrition are front and center at OHSU during National Women’s Health Week

WHAT:  

OHSU Center for Women’s Health and OHSU Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness are raising awareness about women’s health and nutrition during National Women’s Health Week (#NWHW), which is May 8-14. Here’s why it matters:

• Nearly 20 percent of women nationwide report they are in “fair or poor” health (CDC)
• More than one-third of women are considered obese (NIH)
• One in 6 women does not have a personal physician or health care provider (Kaiser Family Foundation)
• Just under half of women nationwide have poor mental health (CDC)
• The female population is aging: 20 percent of women are 65 and older (U.S. Census Bureau)

The OHSU Center for Women’s Health is the only designated National Center of Excellence in the Pacific Northwest. Led by Michelle Berlin, M.D., M.P.H., and Renee Edwards, M.D., M.B.A., the Center provides a full spectrum of services and programs for women.

The OHSU Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness, led by Kent Thornburg, Ph.D., focuses on reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases by promoting healthy, nutrient-rich diets based on whole foods before conception, during pregnancy and in early childhood.

Monday, May 9: National Women’s Check-up Day

Tuesday, May 10: Oregon Nutrition Day 2016 - “Appetite: Why We Eat What We Eat”

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: OMSI Auditorium, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland, OR 97214
Details: Hosted by OHSU Moore Institute. Features keynote address from New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Michael Moss. Registration is $25; the event is open to the public.

Wednesday, May 11:

• 10th anniversary of OHSU Center for Women’s Health Circle of Giving Day.
  Details: Generous Oregon donors who are members of the OHSU Circle of Giving will hear presentations from three women’s health research finalists and vote on which research project will receive a $125,000 grant, with winner announced to media at end of the day. • “Menopause 101” lecture featuring OHSU menopause expert Karen Adams, M.D.

Thursday, May 12: Twitter Chat “#AskOHSUWomens: Your Health Questions Answered”

Time: 10 to 11 a.m.
Details: Experts for the OHSU Center for Women’s Health will be on hand to answer questions about topics related to women’s health. Reporters and the public are encouraged to either submit questions anonymously in advance of the event or ask during the live chat.

Friday, May 13: Oregon Women’s Health Network May lecture: “Healthy Communities, Healthy Families, Healthy Women”
Time: 8:30 a.m. (doors open at 8 a.m.)
