WHAT:

Gun violence has been growing at an alarming rate in Oregon in recent years. The newly developing Gun Violence Prevention Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University is applying a public health approach to prevent injuries and death. Using federal funding now available for research into gun violence, OHSU researchers generated an inaugural report on firearm injuries in Oregon emergency departments in October 2022, and have been updating it quarterly since. The discussion will focus on public health approaches to reduce injuries and deaths from firearms in Oregon.

PANELISTS: 

• Moderator Kathleen Carlson, Ph.D., director of the OHSU Gun Violence Prevention Research Center, professor of epidemiology in the OHSU School of Medicine, and a core investigator with the Health Services Research Center of Innovation at the VA Portland Health Care System.
• Mackenzie Cook, M.D., associate professor of surgery (trauma, critical care and acute care surgery) in the OHSU School of Medicine, and assistant trauma medical director.
• Roy Moore, co-director of the Community Care team for Healing Hurt People operated by the Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center (POIC).
• Michael Zalanka, M.D., psychiatrist, Legacy Health.
• Ken Duilio, lieutenant, director of the Portland Police Bureau’s Focused Intervention Team to reduce firearms violence in Portland.
• Mubeen Jafri, M.D., associate professor of surgery (pediatric surgery) in the OHSU School of Medicine, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
• Katie Iossi, M.D., associate professor of medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine and general internal medicine physician at the Portland VA Health Care System.
