The New England Journal of Medicine selected a publication co-authored by Eric Roeland, M.D., FASCO, FAAHPM, associate professor of medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine, as one of its notable articles of the year. Roeland is a medical oncologist and palliative care specialist at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and director of the symptom science research group.

The publication, “Ponsegromab for the Treatment of Cancer Cachexia,” was published after OHSU accrued the most North American study participants in the phase 2 clinical trial of a biomarker-driven cancer cachexia study representing cutting-edge symptom science.

Cachexia, a wasting syndrome, is prevalent among patients with multiple forms of advanced cancer. It can lead to weight loss, muscle wasting, reduced quality of life, functional impairment and reduced survival.

A prominent journal like New England Journal of Medicine highlighting cancer cachexia marks a shift in elevating symptoms and patient-centered outcomes.
