Launched in 2015, Oregon Health & Science University’s Transgender Health Program is one of the most comprehensive gender-affirming care programs in the United States. OHSU offers a broad spectrum of medically necessary gender-affirming care, which ranges from hormone therapy and mental health care to surgery and more. While the program serves patients of all ages, the OHSU Doernbecher Gender Clinic specializes in supporting children and adolescents. The program’s providers are active in both clinical care and research. For example, a 2022 study led by gender-affirming surgeon Blair Peters, M.D., estimated the human clitoris has more than 10,000 nerve fibers, a finding can improve surgical care for both transgender and cisgender patients. In addition to helping OHSU patients access gender-affirming care, the program’s faculty and staff also help expand access to care elsewhere by providing educational opportunities for other health care providers and systems.
