Anjali Rameshbabu receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for 2025
Anjali Rameshbabu, Ph.D., a senior research project manager in the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences of OHSU, has been selected for the 2025-26 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in Finland.
Rameshbabu is a health-social psychologist with a focus on individual and workplace strategies for social connection, health and well-being. She is also manager of the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center in the OIOHS.
Her project is titled, “Social Connection at Work: Understanding the Finnish work culture and sharing the Total Worker Health approach to worker well-being.”
The project responds to the global epidemic of loneliness, particularly focusing on the role of work in decreasing loneliness and promoting social connection. Rameshbabu’s research-teaching project includes conducting qualitative research on the work-related drivers of loneliness, social connection and work-life culture in Finland, as well as education on Total Worker Health, an evidence-based approach from the U.S. and its application to reduce loneliness and promote social connection.
Rameshbabu’s Fulbright-Tampere University Scholar Award is courtesy of the Fulbright Finland Foundation and Tampere University. The Fulbright Finland Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organization based in Helsinki. With the purpose of promoting a wider exchange of knowledge and professional talents through educational contacts between Finland and the U.S., the Foundation collaborates with a range of government, foundation, university and corporate partners on both sides of the Atlantic to design and manage study and research scholarships, leadership development programs and internationalization services.

Jane Zhu selected as Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine by National Academy of Medicine
Jane Zhu, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, has been chosen as part of the National Academy of Medicine's (NAM) 2025 class of Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars.
This program recognizes early- to mid-career professionals from diverse health-related fields such as pediatrics, infectious diseases, psychiatry, and biomedical engineering. The program offers a platform for scholars to collaborate with academy members to advance science, tackle health challenges, and drive meaningful change.
Over a three-year term, scholars will participate in various activities, including meetings in Washington, D.C., planning an annual forum, engaging in National Academies events, publishing NAM Perspectives, and attending NAM’s annual meeting each October. NAM President Victor J. Dzau congratulated the new scholars, highlighting their potential to lead transformative change and enhance health and well-being for individuals and communities.

Beaverton Honors Youth HPV Champions with “Change Maker Award”
The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute's Community Outreach and Engagement team recently celebrated the achievements of the Youth HPV Champions initiative at the annual B.I.L.L.I.E.S. (Beaverton Inspiring Leaders, Legends, Innovators in Engagement and Service) Youth Summit and Award Show.
The event, held on May 22, recognized outstanding youth leaders and provided a platform for various organizations and non-profit organizations to showcase their accomplishments.
The Youth HPV Champions, dedicated to promoting HPV prevention among peers, engaged with fellow young leaders to share vital information about civic participation and community service. Attendees were encouraged to explore volunteer opportunities and ask questions regarding involvement in local initiatives.
The highlight of the evening came when the Youth HPV Champions were nominated for the prestigious “Change Maker Award,” a testament to their impactful work within the community.
“We are incredibly proud of our kids for the difference they are making not only in their schools but also in their lives and communities,” said OHSU’s Raul Oviedo, a representative from the Youth HPV Champions. “Thank you to the CORE team for supporting these remarkable students in the HPV initiative.”
The B.I.L.L.I.E.S. event, organized by the Mayor's Youth Advisory Board, aims to empower youth in Beaverton by highlighting their achievements and encouraging civic engagement, reinforcing the importance of youth leadership in shaping a better future.

OHA awards several Family Medicine clinics Tier 5 status
OHSU Family Medicine clinics in East Portland, Gabriel Park, Scappoose and the South Waterfront have achieved Tier 5 status with the Oregon Health Authority’s Patient-Centered Primary Care Home program.
Tier 5 is the highest level a primary clinic can attain and recognizes excellence in a primary care facility through comprehensive, coordinated, equitable, quality health care that also integrates behavioral health.

Thomas Scanlan Receives Prestigious Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award
The American Thyroid Association has awarded the Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Lectureship Award to Thomas S. Scanlan, Ph.D., a professor of physiology and pharmacology in the Department of Chemical Physiology & Biochemistry at OHSU.
This award recognizes exceptional contributions to the field of thyroidology and honors Dr. Sidney H. Ingbar's legacy.
Scanlan has made significant strides in thyroid-related research. His work focuses on the discovery and development of novel synthetic thyroid hormone agonists, which serve as therapeutic agents for numerous diseases unrelated to thyroid dysfunction. Notably, one of his brain-penetrating thyroid hormone agonists is currently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of depression.

OHSU earns unrestricted grant from Research to Prevent Blindness
Research to Prevent Blindness organization has awarded the OHSU School of Medicine an unrestricted grant in the amount of $150,000 per year for five years to support eye research conducted by the Department of Ophthalmology.
Funding criteria included the department's research activities, laboratory environment, and clinical and scientific staff, as evaluated by the organization’s Scientific Advisory Panel. The OHSU School of Medicine holds one of 28 of the organization’s unrestricted grants nationwide.

Jennifer DeVoe joins ABFM board of directors for five-year term
Jennifer DeVoe, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine, has been appointed to the American Board of Family Medicine board of directors for a five-year term. The board of directors comprises 16 physician members and two public representatives, all committed to advancing the field of family medicine.
Founded in 1969, the American Board of Family Medicine is recognized as one of the 24 medical specialty boards by the American Board of Medical Specialties and was the 20th specialty acknowledged by the organization. It remains dedicated to ensuring optimal health care for individuals and the communities served by family physicians, reinforcing its mission to enhance public health and well-being.
