A study led by Hyunjee Kim, Ph.D., finds heat waves are associated with increased adverse health events in adults 65 or older. The authors note, "These findings underscore the vulnerability of this population during heat waves and emphasize the need for tailored adaptation strategies to prepare for the projected increase in intense and prolonged heat wave events."

Teresa Zimmers, Ph.D., discusses the latest advances in research and treatment of cachexia, a muscle wasting disease generally caused by cancer treatment. She says, “People used to think that not much could be done about it, but now we are truly starting to understand the underlying mechanisms that cause cachexia. And from there treatments can be developed. I am hopeful about the future."

New Lines Magazine covers the effects of smoke exposure on reproductive health outcomes, highlighting research by Molly Kornfield, M.D., which looked at the effects of catastrophic smoke exposure on patients undergoing IVF treatment. Kornfield says, “My own reproduction got me really interested in this question, and I anticipated that some of my patients would have a lot of the same questions about what to do in that kind of event.”

Tami Beaty, a breast cancer survivor, is a volunteer event coordinator for an event in Sandy, Oregon, Nov. 14 with OHSU’s Mobile Mammography Program. "I think it’s really important for women to understand that catching stuff early makes a world of difference," she says. "Don’t skip your mammogram."
