Jamie Lo, M.D., co-authors editorial to accompany a retrospective study published in JAMA Internal Medicine that suggests greater risk of preeclampsia, other adverse maternal health outcomes when pregnant people use cannabis. She and his colleague at Texas Southwestern Medical say: " ... the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends not using cannabis during pregnancy, though a growing number of women use cannabis to alleviate pregnancy symptoms."

OPB Think Out Loud interviews Lauren Denneson, Ph.D., about her recent study focusing on the differences between male and female veterans who have attempted suicide. It was the first national study to focus on veterans’ symptoms over time and examine differences between genders in risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Denneson says, "Across our qualitative and quantitative data, women veterans did not receive as much social support as men. Men reported they had spouses, children, neighbors rallying around them in a way that women didn’t. In fact, when women tried to seek social support from a spouse, family member or friend, frequently those people were not only not supportive, but retraumatized them.”

A new study that found evidence of 16 different metals in a wide range of tampons sold in the United States and Europe sparked concern, but Bethany Samuelson Bannow, M.D., says there's little to be concerned about: “There’s small amounts of these metals found, really, everywhere. I would actually be less concerned about having these metals in tampons than I would about having them in food or water.”

A new study finds benefits in using telehealth to help treat substance use disorder. The study offers a look at the role of telehealth patients' recovery from an addiction to fentanyl or other opioids like heroin and painkillers. Ximena Levander, M.D., says, “You feel like you’re being watched or judged by everyone, and telehealth can reduce that sense, whether it’s real or perceived.”

OHSU teams with the Portland Police Bureau for PSA on proper use of child safety seats. Ben Hoffman, M.D., says, “Sadly, we are seeing more dangerous counterfeit car seats being bought online. These counterfeit seats can’t protect kids in a crash, and so we encourage caregivers to only purchase certified car seats from a reputable online or brick-and-mortar retailer.”
