Theater producer Chris Harper tells the Portland Tribune about his experience with a surrogate mother based in Portland, and his experience with the twins being born at OHSU and their three months in the NICU. He says, “Every single person I met in Portland was so kind to me during such a difficult time. The nurses and the doctor at OHSU were some of the most inspiring and brilliant people I have ever met.”

The Sandy Seventh-day Adventist Church will host the OHSU mobile mammography van July 31 to make the breast cancer screening tool more accessible. Event organizer, Tami Beaty, says, “I am a breast cancer survivor so, for me, [this service] is very personal. I know how important it is to catch breast cancer early. My survivability rate and treatment was so much easier with stage one (cancer).”

A new study finds benefits in using telehealth to help treat substance use disorder. The study offers a look at the role of telehealth patients' recovery from an addiction to fentanyl or other opioids like heroin and painkillers. Ximena Levander, M.D., says, “You feel like you’re being watched or judged by everyone, and telehealth can reduce that sense, whether it’s real or perceived.”

An OPB Think Out Loud interview on Safe Social Spaces, a program run by Lines for Life to help youth in crisis, cites an OHSU study that suggests the program may have prevented more than 160 suicide attempts since its inception.

Jackie Shannon, Ph.D., says, “The data collected showed that individuals who reported a greater sense of belonging also reported better physical and mental health. This relationship was consistent across all the groups we worked with. As a health scientist, I found this to be an important finding as we consider policy and resources that support belonging.”

Erin Santos and Marc Freeman, Ph.D., are named one of 50 graduate student-adviser pairs to receive a Gilliam Fellowship in recognition for their outstanding research as well as "their commitments to advancing equity and inclusion in science."
