One of the residents is Callie Krewson, D.O., who was born and raised in Bend and says, “I want to give back to the community that raised me.”

Two years since the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and nearly 50 years of federal abortion protections, patients seeking abortions in Oregon have increased by an estimated 40%. Alyssa Colwill, M.D., says, "For individuals undergoing obstetrical care in Idaho, we are the nearest state that can provide emergency services. Prior to the Dobbs decision, it was rare that anybody from Idaho was transferred to Oregon."

Eric Roeland, M.D., co-chairs an American Society for Clinical Oncology expert panel on guidelines for clinicians, adults with cancer, caregivers, and researchers on the medical use of cannabis in cancer treatment. He says, “Access to cannabis and cannabinoids has far outpaced the science supporting their use. Another major challenge in the [cancer] space is that it feels taboo to talk about cannabis, and clinicians may be hesitant to do so. Health care systems are not approaching this topic head on.”

Maria Rodriguez, M.D., explains to Axios Portland how more than one in 10 of Oregon’s abortion patients in 2023 traveled here from out of state, and that these patients “are often extensively delayed in accessing care, arriving to us much sicker as a result.”
