Three residents are beginning their family medicine training with Central Oregon’s first-ever graduate medical education program, the joint OHSU-St. Charles Three Sisters Rural Track Program, which brings residents to OHSU for its first year and St. Charles Madras for its final two years. One of the residents is Callie Krewson, D.O., who was born and raised in Bend and says, “I want to give back to the community that raised me.”

Bill Cresko, Ph.D., is named the University of Oregon director for the Center for Biomedical Data Science, a collaborative effort with OHSU to attack deadly diseases with big data. OHSU director Sadik Esener, Ph.D., says, “We want to encourage strong collaboration and interaction with interested physicians and faculty across OHSU and the University of Oregon. We will leverage each institution’s strengths to accelerate our combined research efforts, to, ultimately, make the greatest impact."

Eric Roeland, M.D., co-chairs an American Society for Clinical Oncology expert panel on guidelines for clinicians, adults with cancer, caregivers, and researchers on the medical use of cannabis in cancer treatment. He says, “Access to cannabis and cannabinoids has far outpaced the science supporting their use. Another major challenge in the [cancer] space is that it feels taboo to talk about cannabis, and clinicians may be hesitant to do so. Health care systems are not approaching this topic head on.”

The next Great Salt Lick, which has raised about $220,000 to support OHSU Parkinson’s disease research since 2007, will occur Sept. 21 in Baker City.

Research by Catherine Hough, M.D., finds twice-daily use of a mindfulness mobile phone application helps reduce depression in discharged patients who had received intensive care while they were hospitalized. Hough says, “Despite many efforts, no approach has proven to improve psychological outcomes after critical illness. So maybe it’s time to think out of the box.”

Peter Jacobs, Ph.D., predicts artificial intelligence could one day enable an automated hormone delivery system for people with diabetes. He says, “There’s a lot of new technologies coming out right now that could significantly help people.”
