After recent University of Washington medical school graduate Caitlin Quaempts, M.D., completes the OHSU Cascades East Family Medicine Residency Program in Klamath Falls, they plan to work as a family medicine physician for the Yakama Nation.

Posted alongside a list that names OHSU as Oregon’s top NIH-funded institution, a Portland Business Journal story features the NIH-supported work of Steven Mansoor, M.D., Ph.D., to better understand how drugs work at the molecular level. If his team learns the structures of cell receptors associated with chronic inflammation, that information can help design drugs that adjust how the receptors work. Mansoor says: “The reason I find the current work so exciting is if we find a drug that can slow down or block atherosclerosis, that will make a tremendous impact.”

In a story about an Optum-owned Eugene medical practice turning away some patients and Optum seeking to merge with another practice, Jane Zhu, M.D., M.P.P., M.S.H.P., says medical practice consolidation often leads to “higher commercial prices without any definitive positive effect on quality, and really unclear effects on access to care and workforce.”

Kerri Winters-Stone, Ph.D., presented approaches to improving quality of life in cancer survivors at the AACR meeting. In a Cancer Today Magazine article, Winters-Stone says: “Cancer is isolating. If you’re managing cancer alone, it’s not being managed well. We really do need to urgently shift our focus to the needs and concerns of older adults. We need to understand what their preferences are.”

Shivaani Kummar, M.D., moderated the first press conference at the annual meeting and was interviewed by Medscape about accelerated approval of cancer clinical trials. She says that having drugs approved on the basis of surrogate markers doesn't necessarily mean patients are getting ineffective therapies. For instance, if an agent just shrinks the tumor, it can sometimes still be "a huge clinical benefit because it can take the symptoms away.”
