OHSU raising awareness during Suicide Prevention Month

KPTV-TV highlights medication lockboxes available at the OHSU Doernbecher Tom Sargent Safety Resource Center in a story about Suicide Prevention Month. Kyle Johnson, M.D., says, “Here at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, we access many kids each month who have attempted suicide and 90% of kids have attempted suicide by taking overdoses of medicine. The mass majority of those medicines are ones that are readily available at home.”

Study: Compulsive pot users face higher risk of cardiovascular woes

Evan Shalen, M.D., comments in a UPI story on a study noting that adults with cannabis use disorder have a 60% higher risk of a heart attack, stroke or other major cardiovascular event: “People with substance use disorders are known to be at higher risk for many other conditions, including cardiovascular disease. Some of this is likely related to underlying social, economic or medical conditions that contribute both to the substance use disorder and cardiovascular disease.”
