OHSU Researcher Wins Major Award for Eye Scan Technology

OHSU Casey Eye Institute ophthalmologist and researcher David Huang, M.D., Ph.D., receives the 2023 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Award for co-inventing the medical imaging technology optical coherence tomography, or OCT, which helps prevent blindness by being widely used to diagnose and manage vision-threatening eye diseases. OCT can see microscopic details in the retina, light-sensing tissue inside the eye, which Huang notes is “not much thicker than a strand of hair, but it has 10 internal layers.”

Brodt says: “Unsurprisingly, well-resources communities and health care systems are experiencing better outcomes than under-resources ones during the pandemic. The Indian Health Services operates with funding of approximately $4,000 per capital, while the national average is approximately $10,000 per capita. The burden of COVID-19 on Indian Country will likely be grave.”
