Northwest scientists help find a green alternative to produce beauty products: algae

An OPB News story notes that Luiz Bertassoni, D.D.S., Ph.D., and his lab have been awarded $1 million to build the Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub in Portland. “The funds will help the lab expand its work using 3D printers, with the aim of doing everything from healing major bone injuries, personalizing cancer treatments and even building full-sized functional organs for transplant.”

Opioids are overrated for some common back pain, a study suggests

NPR-Radio covers a new study suggesting opioids have little, if any, sustained benefit for treating back and neck pain. Richard Deyo, M.D., says the new study underscores a significant blind spot in the evidence around the prescribing of opioids for acute back pain, saying, “It’s a well-designed trial. It’s going to ruffle feathers, and I think there’ll be a lot of controversy.”

In a Medscape article, Mary Moffit, Ph.D., discusses risk-reduction initiatives to prevent physician suicide, including OHSU’s Resident and Faculty Wellness Program.
