ED Visits for Mental Health Among Medicaid Enrollees Varied Widely by Region

OHSU researchers measured wide differences among U.S. states in the number of people who resort to hospital emergency departments for treatment of mental health conditions through Medicaid. Lead author John McConnell, Ph.D., says, “Emergency departments are trained in handling urgent and acute health needs, but they’re not necessarily a good fit for the long-term well-being of people in need of mental health treatment.”
