Potential drug takes aim at emerging Chikungunya virus

Daniel Streblow, Ph.D., is leading research to develop an antiviral treatment for the chronic, debilitating joint pain that 30% to 40% of people experience after becoming infected with the emerging Chikunguyna virus. Streblow says: “We have the potential to develop an antiviral that could be used to treat millions of people during large Chikungunya outbreaks and prevent long-term disease in people who are persistently affected by this debilitating disease."

In a WebMD article that reveals toys recalled for safety reasons can be purchased online, Ben Hoffman, M.D., says: “There is an assumption by the public that if something is being sold, that it’s safe, that somebody has determined that it’s safe, and it’s gone through some process to ensure that. But the fact of the matter is things, anything can be sold, and the regulatory process ends up being more reactive than proactive, and so things get in the market and, you know, end up in people’s homes without any proof that they’re safe for kids. That to me is especially scary and unfortunate.”
