A team of OHSU researchers has received $6.7 million from the National Institutes of Health to investigate how cannabis use during pregnancy may affect outcomes for people with HIV.

A report on new clinical guidelines co-authored by Amy Valent, D.O., that women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding should be strongly discouraged from using cannabis. She says, “When things become more normalized in society, it’s a very natural tendency for us to think that we don’t have to think about the potential risks.”

The New York Times reports that full funding has been restored for a nationwide program designed to enhance training among community health workers to improve the care of a growing population of older adults. Laura Byerly, M.D., says, “We need these frontline public health workers to know how to provide age-friendly care.”

A recent evidence review led by Jamie Lo, M.D., finding moderate evidence linking prenatal cannabis exposure to increased risks of preterm birth, low birth weight and small-for-gestational-size infants.

KATU-TV also features an interview in advance of an appreciation luncheon on Sept. 19 honoring research participants involved in the study founded 25 years ago.

A new multicenter randomized controlled study that started at OHSU suggests changing clinical guidance for treatment of spinal cord injury. Brandon Togioka, M.D., says, “While this study does not support allowing patients to have low blood pressure, it does suggest that aggressively elevating blood pressure may be doing more harm than good.”
