Even without COVID surge, Oregon hospitals nearly full

In Oregon, hospitals are full, budgets are strained, and staffing is short — and not because of COVID cases. Matthias Merkel, M.D., Ph.D., says: “We’re running a full hospital every day for months. We’re essentially using every area we can and have to board patients in our emergency room who should be in an inpatient area. We can only admit the next patient when the previous patient has discharged.”

Use of telehealth instead of, or as well as, in-person maternal care results in similar and sometimes better clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, according to new research by Amy Cantor, M.D. She says, "Replacing or supplementing in-person maternal care with telehealth-delivered care generally results in similar, and sometimes better, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction compared with in-person care."
