Suicide attempts linked to medication rising among children ages 10-12, OHSU study finds

While discussing his study that found suicide attempts and self-harm by children ages 10 to 12 quadrupled between 2000 and 2020, Kyle Johnson, M.D, says youth suicide attempts are often done impulsively while using medications that are readily available in the home, adding: “That impulsivity can lead them to make a split-second decision that can end their lives or lead to significant morbidities, such as an intensive care unit hospitalization or even a liver transplant for certain medications."

Oregon ICU beds dwindle, hospitals near capacity amid staffing shortages

Northwest Native American Center of Excellence will expand efforts

The OHSU Northwest Native American Center of Excellence will expand its efforts to encourage American Indian and Alaska Natives to pursue careers in health care with the help of a $3.4 million grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration. The funding will also allow center partners Washington State University Elson F. Floyd College of Medicine and UC Davis School of Medicine to establish their own post-baccalaureate medical pathways for Native students.
