National Telestroke Program Reduces Transfer Rates, Benefitting Patients and Hospitals

A nationwide virtual telestroke program implemented throughout the Veterans Health Administration reduced the need for emergency department interhospital transfers within the VA by matching patients to their appropriate level of care for their stroke; Helmi Lutsep, M.D., says: “The ability to stay at the local VA may increase veteran satisfaction and provide potential resource savings for the VA,” adding that the study's findings also could be applied to other telestroke programs that are dispersed across geographical regions.
