Oregon State receives $5.6M to study protein engineering, a key tool in fighting disease

Oregon State University has received a $5.6 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to launch a research center devoted to the creation of novel proteins with disease-fighting potential. Among others, the center will benefit a project led by Eric Gouaux, Ph.D., into depression and other mood disorders.

Oregon ends residency rule for medically assisted suicide

Oregon will no longer require state residency to allow terminally ill people to receive lethal medication prescribed by a doctor, the Associated Press reports in a story picked up by outlets across the country; Nicholas Gideonse, M.D., says: “Any restriction on medical aid in dying that doesn’t serve a specific medical purpose is difficult. In no other way is my practice restricted to Oregon residents, whether that’s delivering babies in the past or other care that I provide.”
