COVID hospitalizations strained 'under-bedded' Oregon healthcare systems

Oregon has the fewest hospital beds per capita in the country. Coupled with an existing health care workforce shortage and folks leaving their jobs during the pandemic, Oregon's health care system came close to the brink. John Hunter, M.D., tells KATU-TV: “Oregon has been under-bedded for some time. Not only were we kind of starting from behind, but the pandemic revealed how much there is need for a complex care in the setting of a pandemic, but generally, as the population grows and ages, more beds will be needed.”
