Meditation: Doing little, achieving a lot

Dana Dharmakaya Colgan, Ph.D., says, “We can see the beneficial effects that meditation has on medical and mental health conditions,” and lists high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic pain, attention deficit disorder and sleep disorders among many conditions whose symptoms can be alleviated by meditation.

OHSU helping to develop new blood test to detect cancers

Early results from a national study led at OHSU by Tomasz Beer, M.D., finds a simple blood test can detect as many as 50 types of cancer: "The test looks at tiny amounts of cancer DNA that are spilled into the blood and are detectable. It pinpoints what kind of cancer or what organ the cancer came from."

A study co-authored by Claudio Mello, Ph.D., identifies specific molecular characteristics that distinguish birds from animals and explain birds' ability to fly; these findings pave the way for future experiments to reveal the evolution of neuronal networks that enable the different modes of movement of legs and hands, a characteristic of bipedal animals, such as birds and human."
